Abstract

Through a personal narrative approach, this chapter explores the lived experience perspective of strengths-based practice. Drawing on grey literature and empirical evidence, the chapter first explores how strengths-based practice has been reported as being perceived by people with lived experience, their role and involvement in implementation and its effectiveness in improving their lives. Following that is a comprehensive reflection by our lived experience co-author Kar-Man Au who describes her care experience as transformative, moving from feelings of shame and powerlessness to self-sufficiency and confidence building. She draws attention to important components of strengths-based practice which include understanding the root cause, fostering self-care and self-reliance and the promotion of personal responsibility. To further demonstrate practical experiences, the chapter includes two case vignettes demonstrating their experience with strengths-based working. We conclude by offering practical steps to adopt strengths-based practice from a lived experience perspective.
