Abstract
Introduction: Acquired Brain Injuries (ABIs), including stroke, are among the leading causes of death and disability in the UK, contributing to a major public health challenge for younger adults who may exhibit a range of psychosocial impacts such as isolation or diminished quality of life. Nurses play a pivotal role in helping individuals navigate a post-ABI world, but the exact mechanisms underlying psychosocial support in a younger population remains largely unknown. Method: This realist evaluation explores 10 initial Programme Theories (PTs) uncovered from a realist review. Online interview examining these IPTs were conducted across two participant groups in the UK: young adults with ABI (i.e., Experts by Experience; EbyEs) and service providers. All interviews were recorded, transcribed and uploaded to NVivo, where items were coded into relevant Contexts, Mechanisms and Outcomes (CMOs), ultimately refining the initial PTs and generating a series of CMO configurations. Results or details of the case: A total of 23 interviews were conducted across EbyEs (n=5) and service providers (n=18). The 10 initial PTs were confirmed/refined/refuted, resulting in 3 ‘refined’ PTs being generated: Psychosocial Health, Meaningful Rehabilitation and Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation. In addition, a logic model has been developed from these refined PTs, which will inform future research and intervention development in this population. Conclusion: The realist evaluation approach is invaluable in uncovering what works, for whom, under what conditions and how. By refining PTs derived from the literature, it is possible to develop a psychosocial intervention that can be led by nurses for youn
