Abstract
From a doctoral student’s vantage point, this reflective article metaphorically uses the dynamic capabilities framework-sensing, seizing, and transforming- to explore how “scaffolding techniques” might improve the International Business (IB) doctoral experience and support students aiming for research-intensive careers. The dynamics of contemporary academia increasingly require doctoral students to build broad, adaptive capabilities, so they can no longer rely solely on their home university’s PhD program. Instead, students should sense opportunities to grow, seize the advantages of developmental paths, and transform their paths using a variety of “scaffolding techniques”, such as targeted conferences and purposeful co-authorship. As a geographically and institutionally diverse group of doctoral students, we share our perspectives on enhancing PhD education and thriving in a research-intensive environment.
