Abstract

Transmission expansion is crucial for unlocking the full potential of renewable energy resources and enabling the decarbonization of power systems. A wide range of technologies is available to address transmission congestion, including but not limited to building new transmission lines, reconductoring existing ones, and deploying non-wire technologies such as power flow control devices, dynamic line rating, and energy storage systems. However, one of the most challenging questions is determining which technology is most suitable for each location of the transmission network. This paper introduces a methodology based on key performance indicators (KPIs) to assist transmission planners and stakeholders in identifying the most appropriate technology for transmission expansion. Security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) is used to evaluate these KPIs. This paper demonstrates a proof of concept for this methodology using a small three-bus test system and for a short horizon.
