Abstract

In this chapter, I analyze the transmedia world of The Walking Dead, examining its movement across and growth within different media. I am not interested in undertaking a close reading of the each of the texts that constitute the world of The Walking Dead—something that has been done well elsewhere—but instead concentrate of what I argue are the most important elements of the franchise: the comics, The Walking Dead TV series and its various spin-offs, and the video games. I demonstrate that while The Walking Dead has become the zombie franchise par excellence, industry production practices have played a role in the development and expansion of the franchise, with different creative and commercial voices affecting the franchise’s direction.
