Abstract

The hybrid diode rectifier-modular multilevel converter (DR-MMC) HVDC system for WF integration has better operation performance and economic efficiency. However, the AC filter of 40% of the DR capacity is required due to the operation requirements of the system, which increases the volume and cost of the offshore platform. Therefore, grid-forming wind turbine generators (GFM WTGs) with the reactive power coordination and voltage control capability can be introduced to optimize the capacity of the AC filter. This paper considers the allocation of the GFM WTGs, and analyzes the influence of the AC filter and GFM WTG capacity on system stability based on small-signal model. Finally, the design requirements for AC filter capacity under different GFM proportions are identified to guide cost-effective configurations that meet stability and efficiency targets.
