Abstract
The question of whether it is ethical to operate a historic object within a museum collection has long taxed the heritage sector. The operation of any historic object with moving parts is likely to lead to wear-related damage, meaning that parts will need to be repaired or replaced over time. Yet maintaining a working object in static condition is not without risk to its component parts. If the ability to move can be considered an original feature of the object, any mechanical seizing and loss of movement could also represent loss of value. Without experiencing the object in operation, can a viewer ever appreciate the object fully or comprehend its impact on those living and working alongside it during its working life?
