Abstract
At a large pond in mid-Wales, studies of the breeding amphibians present in the 1980s found some 3000 Lissotriton newts (smooth and palmate), 1400 common toads Bufo bufo, and some 200 female common frogs Rana temporaria. Introduction of great crested newts in the 1990s seemed by 2025 to have altered the makeup of breeding amphibians to the extent that for 3 years no spawn of toads or frogs have been found and Lissotriton newts, especially the smooth newt numbers have dropped alarmingly low. The possible reasons forb these changes are discussed.
