Abstract

The article discusses the function of Epiphanius' biography of Origen in Chapter 64 of his 'Panarion' (or 'Medicine chest against all heresies') and explores the potential value of biographical data contained in the Panarion. It investigates Epiphanius' sources and looks at the impact Epiphanius' depiction of Origen had throughout history. It then scrutinizes the biography in some detail: Epiphanius' association of Origen with a probably fictional gnostic sect of Origenians, his disparaging account of his education, his false representation of Origen's steadfastness in the face of persecution culminating in the claim that Origen revoked his faith. The article also looks at Epiphanius' erroneus depictions of Origen's move from Alexandria to Palestine and his alleged period of activity in Tyre. It concludes with a summary on Epiphanius' biography of Origen being a typical product of his approach to writing biographies of heretics in other parts of the Panarion, in particular that of Mani in Panarion 66.
