Abstract

Chapter 8 explores the importance of models of parental advocacy in child and family social work. It begins with definitions of parental advocacy and its significance in social work practice. The theoretical frameworks that underpin parental advocacy in child and family social work are also discussed. The chapter then presents empirical evidence on the impact of parental advocacy, drawing on findings from a study of peer parental advocacy in an English local authority based on over 25 interviews and focus groups. Ethical considerations and challenges in supporting parental advocacy in social work are also discussed. Finally, the chapter explores future directions for research and practical guidance for practice on parental advocacy, providing insight into how practitioners can continue to promote parental advocacy and support families in achieving positive outcomes. Overall, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the critical role that parental advocacy plays in child and family social work.
