Abstract

Christopher Lillington-Martin talks to us this week about his research on the historian Procopius, who lived in the sixth century AD and who accompanied the general Belisarius in the wars of Emperor Justinian I. The interview focuses on Procopius’ most well-known work, The Secret History, a brilliant piece of invective/comedy, which included – alongside its portraits of demon emperors and prostitute empresses – some intriguing references to older classical texts.
