Abstract

Computer assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDAS) is now widely used to support the management, storage, coding and analysis of qualitative data. In accounting research there is much evidence of CAQDAS, but its application seems primarily related to coding and the management of data rather than analytical or writing tasks. This chapter discusses some of the most popular CAQDAS packages, reviewing the extent of their use in four leading accounting journals, and reflects on some of the tensions of using software for qualitative data analysis. The chapter concludes by briefly suggesting new directions for integrating CAQDAS in accounting scholarship.
