Abstract

In its analysis of Anna and Jörg Winger’s Deutschland 89 (Amazon Prime and SundanceTV, 2020), the chapter explores the relevance of post-communist trauma, experiences of being heimlatos (rootless) and cultural divisions between East and West Germany to the meaning and existence of a unified nation long after die Wende (the transition). Bringing to the forefront the global relevance of political tensions surrounding borders, territorial claims and nationalism, the chapter reads die Wende as of continued importance to German identity, society and culture. The fact that divisions between East and West Germany prevail over notions of a shared history is central to contemporary political events and to cultural representations of a nation that has struggled to form a common, post-reunified identity.
