Abstract

This paper provides a simplified explanation of the approach to designing the output matching network of the auxiliary stage in sequential load-modulated balanced amplifiers. Using geometrical considerations, it is shown that the phase delay of the auxiliary matching network has an effect on the performance both when the auxiliary is on even for an ideal device, as well as in off condition when the output conductance of the device is not zero. This confirms the results shown by the literature using different methods of analysis and provides a simple explanation for the bandwidth limitations found in high-power sequential load modulated balanced amplifiers.
