Abstract
Caring for children and young people (CYP) with life-threatening conditions, specifically childhood cancer, involves significant emotional labour for healthcare providers, particularly nurses. Childhood cancer, though rare and biologically distinct from adult cancers, remains the leading cause of disease-related death in children globally, with around 1,800 new cases annually in the UK. Treatment advances have improved 5-year survival rates from 30% in the 1960s to 80% in the 2000s, but outcomes remain poor for advanced disease stages. Childhood cancer care involves intense emotional labour for nurses who must balance complex clinical tasks with psychosocial support. Work-related stress and moral distress are common due to high workloads and ethical challenges. Nurses need to foster therapeutic relationships, support honest communication, and manage compassion fatigue while prioritising the best interests of children and families during the transition to palliative care.
