Abstract

This chapter explores the emotional labour experienced by nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), focusing on the challenges of caring for critically ill infants and their families. It highlights the impact of occupational stress, mental health concerns for parents and staff, and the importance of support systems for both nurses and nursing students. The chapter also discusses ethical decision-making in neonatal care, particularly around withdrawal of life-support, and emphasises the need for multidisciplinary approaches to care and emotional support. A fictitious case study is used to bring the discussion to life.
