Abstract

Children's critical care units provide specialised medical environments for children and young people (CYP) requiring intensive monitoring and interventions not available in general wards. In the UK, over 18,000 admissions occur yearly; most of these patients are under one year old. Survival rates are high, but mortality and admission disparities exist based on deprivation and ethnicity. The main reasons for admission include respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological conditions. The emotional demands on healthcare professionals in these units are significant due to the complex nature of care and family dynamics involved. This chapter uses a case study to illustrate the emotional labour of children's nurses working in a critical care environment.
