Abstract
How does journalism invite us to make sense of today's planetary emergency or “world-in-crisis” – emotionally? This chapter first briefly documents the mounting evidence for possible, some would say probable, civilizational and biosphere breakdown and collapse. Next, it explores important ways in which emotions are eviscerated, enacted, and embodied in global crisis reporting and then explains how emotions are variously at work in producing the evident “existential aversion” displayed by much journalism in its deficient portrayal of today's world-in-crisis. Emotions and affect, it is argued, are an integral and necessary part of journalism. Potentially, they can help us orient to a world-in-crisis as well as pathways to an ecologically sustainable and socially just future. This will only become more consequential in the challenging years and decades ahead. The chapter ends by identifying key areas for future journalism research in a world of systemic, deepening, and converging crises.
