Abstract

This evidence document builds on my academic expertise on diversity and female entrepreneurship spanning a decade of research resulting in multiple publications in international and national outlets. This evidence particularly draws on empirical research I conducted in the form of a Productivity Insights Network funded project in 2019-2020 (see project report here and case study here). The project aimed at addressing productivity and socio-economic inclusion trough innovation centres, hubs and districts in the North West of England, by focusing on the barriers and enablers for women in accessing resources and networks for entrepreneurial success. The study consisted of 24 interviews with policy managers, innovation hub managers and entrepreneurs, to gain in-depth insights into the impact of inclusion on regional growth and productivity. This was further complemented with in-depth analysis of governmental priorities for innovation and business growth, including innovation policy documents, observation, and supplementary material. The evidence I collected and draw upon suggests that to increase growth and productivity, there needs to be both, a policy and organisational shift in mindset on what successful entrepreneurship and innovation are that is more inclusive of different forms of entrepreneurial action.
