Abstract
This chapter explores the dynamic synthesis of various epistemologies by arguably one of the greatest Muslim scholars of India, Shāh Walī Allāh al-Dihlawī. He brought together the entire breadth of the intellectual currents of his time to produce a civilizational worldview that married reason with revelation. This union produced unique insights in ḥadīth, mysticism, law, ethics, theology, and philosophy. Walī Allāh embodied the life of a bricoleur: he took from diverse strands and wove them together with imagination and aesthetic sensibility to carve out original and courageous insights. In this, he was traditional; he engaged and questioned with what preceded, he linked it to his own exigencies, and he imagined and invented for a future that was unfolding. Yet, in all its complexity, his aim was simple: to make Islam, as a way of being in the world, accessible to everyone, and to have this lead to communal harmony. For him, epistemology and society were to be coherent and cohesive.
