Abstract

As its principal theoretical intervention this chapter introduces the concept of inter-stigmatization to examine the overlapping experiences of stigma associated with disability and queer identities in visual and performing arts. Building on and critiquing Erving Goffman’s theory of stigma, it argues that existing models inadequately account for the simultaneous operation of multiple forms of marginalization. Drawing on queer and crip theory, while acknowledging their conceptual limitations, the article analyses a range of cultural texts, including Tea and Sympathy, Before Night Falls, the performances of Drag Syndrome, paintings by Joaquín Sorolla and Manuel López-Villaseñor, Greg Marshall’s memoir, and the Spanish documentary Me gustas cuando eres tú. These case studies demonstrate how disability and non-normative sexuality frequently intersect through embodied practices, representation, and social exclusion. The article concludes that inter-stigmatization provides a productive critical framework for understanding intersecting forms of discrimination and for expanding analyses of disability and queer identities within contemporary cultural production.
