Abstract

This paper articulates a role for past perception in the intentional structure of episodic recollection. My claim is that episodic recollection involves past perception as part of its intentional structure. The arguments of this paper therefore demonstrate how we can hold in tandem two important claims about episodic recollection and so is conciliatory in spirit: When we are ‘living in the memory’ intentional awareness is singularly directed at past events; nonetheless, there is a plausible role for past perception in episodic recollection as a structural feature, such that ‘living in the memory’ is obliquely ‘living in the past perception.’
