Abstract

This chapter examines anorexia nervosa (AN) in transgender and nonbinary people, reviewing prevalence, risk factors, and theoretical models. It highlights how disordered eating may function to suppress secondary sex characteristics, achieve androgyny, or align the body with gender identity, but also notes that AN is not always directly linked to gender dysphoria. The chapter explores minority stress, stigma, and intersectionality as key influences on risk, and considers resilience factors such as social support and gender-affirming care. Clinical implications are discussed, emphasising the need for inclusive, gender-affirmative, and identity-informed treatment approaches.
