Abstract
This chapter identifies an increasing research focus on ‘new actors’ in the field of labor-management, including civil society organizations, issue-based employers’ associations, management consultants, government agencies dealing with issues of equality and precarity, and governing institutions located above and below the nation state. Actors of this kind often promote relatively ‘soft’ forms of regulation, including voluntary codes and standards, and form coalitions with more established actors, such as trade unions. They have become more influential within labour–management relations because of the decline of the old, union-based system, changing workforce composition, and liberal globalization. The chapter ends by presenting a research agenda for new employment actors and identifies how industrial and occupational psychologists might contribute to this emerging theme.
