Abstract

The film features three stories that illustrate three different generations of Chinese migration from the 1950-60s, 1980s-90s and early 2000s, as well as the second generation who have been born and raised in Wales. They all had different aspirations and motivations, from pursuing master’s degrees in law to wanting to open a big nightclub in Wales, and somehow established their restaurants and homes in three very different urban environments, from a listed building in a historic conservation area, a shopping centre in the only Post-war Level 1 New Town Development in Wales, to a regenerated historic dockland. Among these experiences, our storytellers reveal to us the various visions and choices in expressing their identities and heritage, from cuisine choices to the way they cultivate the spaces in their restaurants, and the symbolism and objects that represent what's 'Chinese' to them. We also learn how they find home and belonging in this land that often feels both foreign and familiar to them, how they found their communities within Wales, whether through adversity or by playing rugby, and how they all provide a home away from home to others.
