Abstract
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Human Genome Project, and the symbolic 10th anniversary of the genome’s initial sequencing. However, the project has failed to meet all expectations. “We were disappointed to find that a few genes do not constitute a key to eliminating such diseases as cancer or diabetes”. It turned out that the high predictability of genetic tests was limited only to dominant single gene disorders while the relations between gene expression and the environment are unusually complex. In recent years we are experiencing a genuine expansion of new technologies based on the knowledge of genetics. The latter systematically becomes an integral element of medical practice. Rapid development of the discussed discipline calls for far more complex regulatory model, consisting of several elements: a) instruments of human rights’ protection, b) deontological norms and principles of good clinical practice, c) acts with binding force. It should be emphasised that such regulations ought to be formulated gradually, as the final result of the employers, judges, professionalists, particular interest groups and the society’s cooperation. Education is the most powerful tool of augmenting the autonomy of an individual and its protection against possible threats, associated with the application of genetics. Full use of the genetic data potential is possible, provided that persons who get access to it are fully aware of the consequences associated with the knowledge of genetics and are able to interpret it adequately. It seems that full realisation of the solidarity and altruism principles is possible only through education. This objective may be achieved both through proper educational programmes and, first of all, through an open, balanced and transparent public debate.
