Abstract
I aim to demonstrate that Eugenikos’ Trinitarian theology, especially concerning the doctrine of the Holy Spirit’s procession, is strongly grounded in the Patristic and Medieval Hellenophone Trinitarian traditions. I especially examine one of Eugenikos’ most important polemical works concerning this aspect of Trinitarian theology, his Syllogistic Chapters Against the Latins on the Holy Spirit’s Procession from the Father Alone, which was likely produced between 1437 and 1438, as part of Markos’ role as leader of a small group of experts commissioned by Emperor John VIII to prepare texts before to the Council of Ferrara-Florence. I show throughout this article that Markos commonly evoked the Church Fathers to support his arguments, including the Cappadocian Fathers, Ioannes Chrysostomos, Maximos the Confessor, Pseudo Dionysios, and Kyrillos of Alexandria. However, Markos also betrays a likely influence from Medieval Hellenophone polemicists against the filioque, including Photios, Niketas of Byzantium, Eustratios of Nicaea, and Nikolaos of Methone.
