Abstract

Networks are an important means of mobilising opinion, communicating knowledge and disseminating information. To retain their relevance, networks must have sets of shared values and provide added value for their members. For Global Footprint Network and its Partners these challenges could be acute as the Network brings together a diverse range of Partner organisations including corporations, consultancies, governments at different levels, NGO’s and academic bodies. Partners will have an interest or ‘stake’ in the Ecological Footprint but these are likely to be expressed in very different ways. Global Footprint Network is now in its seventh year and it is particularly timely to analyse the relationship between the ‘core’ of the Network and its Partners. Why do its Partners value Global Footprint Network? How does GFN engage with its Partners? What messages and environmental information does GFN provide to its Partners? How might we characterise the nature of the relationship between GFN headquarters and its Partner organisations? In this paper, we provide preliminary answers to these questions and analyse the challenges that the global Ecological Footprint community faces in further developing a network-based model of communication and engagement.
