Abstract

The Forest Service in South Lake Tahoe required a 25,000 SF facility that would consolidate fourteen wide ranging departments, from timber and forestry to law enforcement to heritage and archeological work. While not primarily a visitor center, the project was conceived to provide tourists and residents with a face for the Forest Service, as well as a destination for information. Our aim in this scheme was to project the Forest Service's range of work in the architecture: to move beyond the romantic forest, to the rich heritage and economy of contemporary, sustainable and viable forestry practice. In a protected region of environmental beauty, the Forest Service desired that this building should proclaim its goals of sustainable forest lands for recreation, work, and living. In this, passive solar technology was harnessed in orientation, trombe walls, and materials. Sustainable, local materials were included in the design. The entrance and lobby face southern views to the mountain range and the surrounding forest. On entering the building, one moves through the progression of wood use, from raw material to hewn timbers on the exterior and ecologically manufactured wood products on the interior. Timber used in the interior is dimensioned appropriate to current best forestry practice, of local species. Ecologically sourced wood products make the reception and display areas.
