Abstract
This article outlines the taught learning disability component in the common foundation programme provided at one school of nursing in a large university. The taught component is designed to promote knowledge, skills and attitudes that will make effective care delivery easier for this potentially vulnerable group of patients. The health needs of people with learning disabilities are outlined and contemporary barriers to accessing primary and secondary healthcare settings considered.
