Abstract
The article discusses the history of the architectural detail called the fan vault, which was used to decorate the ceilings of European churches beginning in the 14th century. The history of the fan vault and the Gothic vault is presented. Emphasis is given to the architecture of church buildings that were constructed after the Norman Conquest. A number of architectural drawings are included in the article that demonstrate fan vaulting and the layout of Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire, England..
