Abstract

This paper explores the social construction, or image, of priests and priestesses presented in inscribed decrees of the city of Athens honouring them from the fourth century BC to the Augustan period. Based on an analysis of the 28 surviving decrees of this type, texts and translations of which are presented in an Appendix, the paper seeks to address three questions: (a) What is the image of a good priest or priestess presented in these decrees and what similarities and differences are there as compared with other types of official? (b) To what extent and in what ways is a priestess constructed differently from a priest? (c) What changes are there over time in the way priests and priestesses, their qualities and services, are described, and how should we explain those changes?
