Abstract
The ruins of Spynie Palace near Elgin are a remarkable survival largely from the 15th and 16th centuries. But this was a bishop's residence for a much longer period from the 12th to the 17th centuries, and archaeological excavations, coupled with historical research, have illuminated the way in which the palace buildings and defences developed through several centuries of Scotland's formative history.
