Abstract

This literature review aims to provide an improved understanding of successful businesses and their approaches to procurement and the relevance of these to the debate on sustainable public procurement. Sustainable procurement is viewed here as the pursuit of sustainable procurement objectives through the purchasing and supply process, incorporating environmental, social and economic elements. The review found that businesses that engage in a range of sustainable purchasing and supply practices tend to perform better. Sustainable procurement research and practice are changing apace, and future research could usefully include how sustainable procurement might be affected by a recession, how to balance different elements of sustainable procurement, how sustainable procurement policy fits with the SME agenda, and sustainability issues in global supply chains.
