Abstract
Consider the motion of a two-dimensional droplet of a partially wetting fluid over topographical substrates. Assuming that spreading occurs in the Stokes regime, a singular perturbation procedure yields a set of integro-differential equations for the locations of the two droplet fronts. By analyzing these equations, we illustrate a number of intriguing features that are not present when the substrate is flat, such as the existence of multiple equilibria which allows for a hysteresis-like effect on the apparent contact angle. Additionally, we demonstrate a stick-slip behavior of the contact line as it moves along the local variations and the interesting possibility of a relatively brief recession of one of the contact lines.
