The ideal is that all routine toxicity testing be undertaken in human-derived cells and tissues at the in vitro level. However models are needed that take account of metabolic and systemic reaction pathways for the better understanding of exposure parameters in vitro and their extrapolation to achieve safe exposure in vivo.
