Abstract
This paper summarises findings on the practices and perceptions of industrial liaison in four universities within the federal University of Wales system in the UK. The research, part of the European Union Targeted Socio-Economic Research Programme study on ‘Universities, Technology Transfer and Spin-Off; Academic Entrepreneurship in European Regions’, involved surveys and interviews with both Industrial Liaison Officers (ILOs) and academics in receipt of their services and non-users. Broadly speaking ILO activity tends to be reactive and administrative. Academics consider, often mistakenly, that ILO work should be more commercial, as well as pressing for it to be even more strongly market-orientated
