Abstract
This article looks at changes in the way in which athletic and military victories were commemorated in Delphi and Olympia between the late Archaic period and the end of the fifth century BC. It makes use of Snodgrass's distinction between raw and converted offerings, and tries to explain why 'converted' offerings (statues) were preferred by athletic victors much earlier than they were by military victors.
