Abstract
This essay explores a particular manifestation of the “Stadtgedicht” or city-poem. It traces the way that Dresden has become a significant topos in German poetry in the second half of the twentieth century. The identification of a complex of associations, motifs, and images reveals the poets’ concern with commemorating the devastating fire-bombing of Dresden in 1945. Taking its cue from essays by Wulf Kirsten and Gerrit-Jan Berendse on Dresden poetry of the 1960s and 1970s, this piece examines how the tradition established in those decades has been developed by a subsequent generation of German poets writing in the 1980s and 1990s. The representation of Dresden in relation to various histories (national, personal, intertextual) returns repeatedly to the tension between what passes away and what is preserved in perpetuity.
