Abstract
This article, originally presented as a lecture at an international conference jointly orgainised by the Wilhelm Raabe and Theodor Storm Societies, challenged the standard view that Wilhelm Raabe was consistently critical of Bismarck and Bismarck's Germany. It argued that the novel "Abu Telfan", written at the time of the Prusso-Danish War of 1864 and the Prusso-Austrian War of 1866, espoused many of the criteria of those in the pro-Prussian, Little Germany camp who attacked German particularism and idealism and instead called for a new spirit of realism in all areas, political, moral and philosophical.
