Abstract

This article deals with three contemporary Catalan texts: a TV3 programme from the series Passat particular where illness and historical memory meet in a case of female depression during the 1930s; a graphic novel dealing with breast cancer and the dilemmas faced by the protagonist regarding her post-mastectomy body; and a controversial novel which proposes spiritual healing as a cure for cancer. The purpose of putting three very different texts together is to explore the inseparability of the private and the cultural dimensions of illness. The analysis focuses on the three texts as products of contemporary culture in order to assess their potential social impact. Whenever possible, it also delves into the dynamic intertextual relationships they establish with each other, as well as with other texts with similar concerns from different cultures, genres or artistic media.
