Abstract

Purpose - To define the boundaries of a port cluster and analyse how port cluster companies engage in the port logistics process. Design/methodology/approach - Reviews the associated literature before describing the use of the structured analysis and design technique (SADT) to visually present the intra-port clusters in terms of the port logistics process, port activities and the associated actors. Outlines the SADT methodology, which is then applied to a case study of the Port of Busan, located at the south-eastern end of the Korean Peninsular, and handling 40% of total marine export cargo, 81% of container cargo in Korea, and 42% of marine products domestically produced. Expands on the activities encompassed in the SADT modelling of the Busan port cluster: voyage support system activities; port entry system activities; stevedore system activities; transit system activities; storage system activities; and inland transport connect system activities. Findings - Demonstrates how system visualizing helps in understanding the interrelationships between associated companies in a port cluster, and explains how port users and port cluster companies engage in the port logistics process. Research limitations/implications - Has no stated implications for future research. Originality/value - Adds to existing studies into the port logistics process concept, assessing the suitability of a structured analysis and design technique in gaining an insight of the activities and processes in a port cluster.
