Abstract
This presentation explores the competitive opportunities unleashed when innovative technology is combined with an innovative business model. Overlaying new technology onto an existing model may result in competing better; overlaying a new business model on existing technology may result in competing differently but in a manner that is easy to duplicate. Combining an innovative business model with innovative technology offers the opportunity to open up an entirely new market space, such that there may be no direct competition at all. This presentation will show how business model design has been used in classic cases (Dell and SouthWest Airlines) to the potential classics of the future (Better Place and Riversimple). Socially extensive business models, defined and explored in this presentation, are argued to be the key to sustainable manufacturing in the future as they seek to integrate the creation and capture of customer value with the wider needs of society and of the environment. New digital production technologies in 3D printing offer the scope to make the transition from prototyping to series customisation, but raise interesting possibilities with respect to business models.
