Abstract

This chapter reviews the history of sports medicine and sports therapy for athletic injury. “Sports medicine” and “sports therapy” incorporate the expertise of exercise physiologists, nutritionists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, massage therapists, chiropractors, strength and conditioning coaches, and sports psychologists, as well as a team of physicians and surgeons. Recreation, entertainment, competition, exercise, dance, and athletic activity have been part of man's history since the dawn of time. The chapter presents information on some health care professional societies that foster the growth and development of sports medicine. These include International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy (IFSPT), and World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy (WFATT).
