Abstract
This paper presents an overview of what eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is and how it might be applied to the arching and sharing of qualitative multimedia data. It provides information about various current metadata schemas and initiatives based on XML which are primarily applied to textual data. An outline of the levels of metadata required for the fullest description multimedia qualitative data is proposed. Existing metadata standards are then evaluated in terms of their suitability for marking up multimedia data and recommendations are made for metadata schema synthesis and future development.
