Abstract

Children and young people with cerebral palsy have limited opportunities for participation in recreational activities. This is partly as they present with difficulties with motor control and balance. Activities which can be adapted, such as cycling, can provide participatory opportunities. A three year study explored the cycling and physical activity participation with thirty five children. Forty three interviews and twenty two diaries were collected by adapting Mosaic methods. There was always an adult present during data collection to assist with the communication style of the participant. This was to increase the trustworthiness of the data and to enable the child’s voice to be transparent. The data transcripts were verified by the accompanying adult or child where possible, then managed with NVIVO and analysed using a template approach. The children described a wide variety of participatory activities represented by a wheel of participation. These emergent themes were the community and the environment, school and therapies and their personal and cultural factors. The combination of interview and diary data contributed to the Mosaic about participation in recreational activities. This revealed a positive outcome for most children who had received support to participate. Further research will explore these concepts utilising a phenomenological approach.
