Abstract

A community survey of nearly 3000 women asked about analgesic consumption and urinary-tract symptoms. The proportion of women who had taken an average of more than four tablets per day in the year preceding the survey increased significantly with age. These women had significantly more symptoms of urinary-tract infection, but the differences in plasma-urea, plasma-creatinine, blood-pressure, and urinary-concentrating power were not significant statistically. The results show that some individuals can consume comparatively large amounts of analgesics, including phenacetin, without obvious kidney damage.
