Abstract
This paper presents the use of the Electrical Contact Resistance (ECR) technique to study realistic mixed-Elastohydrodynamic (EHL) contacts, where direct asperity contact takes place alongside conditions of very thin lubricant films. A series of disk machine experiments is reported where the contact conditions (and hence lambda ratio) are varied in order to investigate a range of conditions within the mixed lubrication regime. The results identify the high frequency variation of instantaneous contact resistance on a repeatable basis between two superfinished surfaces, as the same sections of surface interact. In addition, the variation of both high frequency and mean ECR values with lambda ratio is investigated, and thermal effects are shown to be highly influential on levels of asperity interaction. Comparisons are drawn with predictions of contact in rough surface EHL simulations using actual three-dimensional surface roughness measurements from the test disks.
