Abstract
Observations of the Orion B cloud by Lada et al. (1991) in the near-infrared indicated that ≡96% of the sources detected were clustered into 4 distinct regions. It appears, therefore, that star formation occurs predominately in a clustered mode. The authors present a simulation of the collision of two massive elements of a Giant Molecular Cloud in which the outcome is a region of high stellar density containing ≡20 protostellar discs. They speculate that this region has similar properties to one of the clusters of infrared sources observed by Lada et al. (1991).
