Abstract
We report a detection of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect at mm wavelengths. A decrement in the brightness of the cosmic microwave background corresponding to Delta y=2.7 +/- 0.7 times 10(-4) has been observed at a wavelength of 2.2 mm in the direction of the x-ray bright Abell cluster 2163. The performance of the novel receiver used for this measurement and analysis of the confusion limits to measurements at these wavelengths indicate that the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect can be measured with precision in a large number of clusters. Measurements at mm wavelengths are expected to suffer from less source confusion than measurements at other wavelengths, and allow the thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects to be distinguished from one another. Measurements at several mm wavelengths together with x-ray observations allow determination of the radial component of the peculiar velocity of the cluster. The measurement of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in several clusters allows a determination of the Hubble expansion parameter which is independent of the usual cosmological distance scale.
